Friday Festival!

Well, even though I'm not a spry "under 30" Golbguru has been kind enough to include my entry in the Festival of Under 30 Finances.  My entry was my rant about how American Idol is Ruining America.  And yes, I was going for dramatic effect with the title.  I don't really think American Idol is ruining America.  Maybe just lessening it slightly.

Golbguru asked an interesting hypothetical.  I opted not to answer it, but there were some very interesting responses.  For the record, I would opt for option #4 like most others.  Analytically, I think #1 is the correct answer.  However, emotionally, paying off debt is very empowering.  I am becoming increasingly convinced that personal finances are MORE about emotions than "running the numbers."

Don't you just love a happy ending?  NCN shares a Financial Fairy Tale for this week's Festival of Frugality.  Too bad this my Mom wasn't reading this to me when I was a kid.  Imagine how much money I would have today!

Carnival of Personal Finance #72

Welcome to the 72nd edition of the Carnival of Personal Finance.  I have to say that I was a bit overwhelmed over the number of submissions.  The topics ranged from Personal Finance basics to advice from one of our founding fathers to a commentary about Social Security.  I had much grander plans for formatting, categorizing and expressing some creativity.  See, it's Halloween tomorrow, and I planned to do a spooks and goblins theme.  However, I was a bit overwhelmed by the number of entries and found it incredibly difficult to cut any out.  So, unless you submitted more than one, you'll find your post included.  Sorry, jack-o-lanterns not included.

The first three are entries that I particularly enjoyed.  After that the entries are in categories according to their topic.  Near the end they are simply listed at "more..."  These were the latest entries submitted.  A tip for future carnival submissions: get your entries in early.  Like before Friday.  Trust me, from Friday on, there are dozens of entries and the host is not likely to notice yours above the crowd.

The Carnival of Personal Finance Is Coming to It's Just Money!

Wow, since when are there so many blog carnivals?!  Well, the granddaddy of them all (no, not the Rose Bowl) is coming to It's Just Money.  I will be hosting the Carnival of Personal Finance this week.  Commensurate with the theme, any posts that relate to personal finance are welcome.  I would encourage participants to emphasize the personal side of "personal finance."  Hearing about your life and how money plays a role in it is always more interesting than reading a tutorial on how to calculate future values.  Although I have been guilty of more than my share of the latter.

Please submit your entries via the Blog Carnival form.  Please get them in early!

Cavalcade of Risk

Welcome to the 2nd edition of the Cavalcade of Risk!  The Cavalcade of Risk was originated by Henry Stern or Dayton, Ohio.  If this is your first time to It's Just Money, I would like to welcome you and thank you for stopping by.  I have been blogging about personal finance, investing, insurance, and random crap for almost four months!  Check out my Welcome Page where you will find my most popular posts.  I also have a handful of insurance posts. 

The Cavalcade of Risk is meant to examine risk in all its forms, but with a lean towards insurance.  For those not familiar with the insurance industry, insurance is a large part of what is known as "Risk Management."  You see, the major ways that you can deal with risk are 1) risk avoidance, such as not living in an earthquake zone, or not driving a car; 2) Risk Reduction, such as only driving in daylight, or never leaving the bunny slopes; 3) Risk Retention, which is deciding that you will bear the financial burden of any risk that you undertake.  You will pay for car repairs, hospital bills, or home repairs out of pocket; 4) Risk Transfer, this is generally insurance.  By buying health insurance you are transferring the financial risk of a major procedure onto your insurance company (assuming they will cover it!).  That's why a carnival about insurance is called the Cavalcade of Risk.  Okay, on to the posts...
