I have written before my review of Discover Card's Cash Back Bonus Program. By no means is it the best program around, but it has some real strengths. The biggest one is the "Get More" program that allows you to earn 5% cash back on all purchases that fall under a specific category. The program rotates every quarter, and some, obviously, are more valuable than others. For example, a few quarters ago they offered 5% cash back on all grocery store purchases. Well, little known secret: you can get up to $50 cash back on Discover Card purchases at some grocery stores. They add the $50 to your purchase amount, and you are not charged financing, cash advance fees, and earn rewards as though you just bought a bunch of rib eye steaks.
The current program is the most valuable "Get More" offer that they have run, perhaps short of the grocery store one.
From now through December 31, you can earn 5% cash back for up to $1000 in purchases (or $50 total cash back) for purchases at:
- Restaurants - from fast food to fine dining
- Movies - from movie tickets to movie rentals
- Books, music and anything else from the following: Amazon.com, Circuit City, Napster, Barnes & Noble, Crutchfield, WaldenBooks and Borders.
The only downside to the promotion is the $1000 limit. You have to register for the program to qualify, but it's really easy. If you carry a Discover Card, just log on to their site, and click the logo that says, "Get More." You confirm on the next page, and you're done. You don't have to fill anything out, or send anything in.
So, if you carry a Discover Card and don't max out this $1000 limit, your just throwing away fifty bucks. This could not be any easier. Think Christmas presents! Whom are you shopping for? Are they a reader? Get them a Barnes & Noble gift card. Film freaks? Movie passes! And if that doesn't work for you, next time you are dining with friends, take everyone's cash, and put the tab on your card. Now, only do this if your friends are not the type to short the group bill.
And if that still doesn't work for you, buy yourself a few restaurant and movie gift cards before the end of the year, and use them at your leisure when you feel like a night out.
Credit cards wiht rewars are great convenient but you should take into account that reward credit cards (even such profitable as Discover card cash back bonus program) don't allow you spend less, they force you to spned more for getting more bonus miles, gas points or cash back. If you used to spend a lot with credit card rewards credit cards would be very profitable ofr you.

I have a 5% cashback bonus program on my Discover Student Platinum Card. The thing is that I get my 5% only when I make purchases in the 'popular categories' that change 4 times a year. For all the other purchases I get 1% back, sometimes less. But I still think it's good. I understand that those incetive-based programs force you to spend more but so far I keep track of my spendings and don't get in debt. Getting a credit card at a young age helps you to establish good credit history and to learn financial management. Spending money is a nice thing, after all. With Disocver credit cards you at least have an opportunity to earn a little bit on spending

Rewards credit cards, though making you spend more than you can repay sometimes, are at high demand today. Cards with bonus points or cash back always allow you to have something back. The thing is that most of them are only found among good credit cards and such cards are not available just to everyone. You can be approved for the card and enjoy all its benefits if your credit rating is right for it. So, check it out.

Yeah, the Discover More Card (that's the new name for it) isn't the greatest cash back card out there. I prefer the Discover Open Road (gas) Card for 5% back on gas and auto maintenance. You can always convert back and forth between the Discover Open Road card and the Discover More card if Discover More is running a "get more" promotion that's appealing to you.
However, as the article mentioned, there are much better rewards cards than those offerred by Discover. To see which rewards card will pay you the most for your spending profile, you can use the rewards calculator at www.creditcardtuneup.com .

In January, I responded to an ad that said: Apply for a Discover Card and if approved, receive $50 Amazon credit after your first use of the Discover card.
All those requirements were met, but almost 6 months later, and dozens of phone calls to discover, amazon and everyone THEY SAY is responsible for making the credit happen .... and still no $50 credit.
I'm ready to go to the FTC and my Senator.
Any other suggestions?
Thank you, ga
