A roundup of the must read PFblog posts, and the must see games for this weekend.
Amanda at Young and Broke continued her Young Money Questionnaire series with Katie, 21. It's fun to read about where these young people's head are with regard to money at they prepare for life after college.
Chuck at the Finance Journey shares his top 25 ways that he saves money. Many of the tips are very common, but I never knew about #7, 16 or 23. Well, I'm not sure how practical #23 is for most of us, but still, interesting.
Cap at Stop Buying Crap comments on the click fraud reported in BusinessWeek, and asks where do you draw the line?
Similarly, Financial Freedumb almost turned down an advertiser due to philosophical disagreement. But he didn't. He took the cash. I would have too.
Now, read on for my Saturday College Football schedule. And remember, Saturday is for football. The articles above are to be enjoyed during halftimes and when Lou Holtz is talking.
7:00-9:00am ESPN College GameDay. Get a jump on the day's games. There was a twist to the schedule this week, when the #2 (or 3) team, Auburn played on Thursday. The Thursday games rarely feature national powers. You'll certainly hear commentary about their close win over South Carolina, and prognostications about the day to come. Tivo so that you can sleep in, and fast forward through Big and Rich.
All times are Pacific, and rankings are LAMoneyGuy's Computer Rankings.
9:00am-12:00pm ESPN (9)Tennessee at (114)Memphis. Ouch. No reason to watch this one. Memphis no longer has D'Angelo Williams, thus they no longer have a shot at keeping this close.
9:00am-12:00pm ESPN2 (46)Wisconsin at (66)Indiana. Okay, so Wisconsin played Michigan fairly tough and have beaten the also rans on their schedule convincingly enough. The jury is still out on the post Barry Alvarez program. Deliberation is over for Indiana. They're convincingly below average. Wisconsin will win by at least two TDs.
11:30am-2:30pm NBC (NotreDame Brocasing Channel) (10)Notre Dame vs. (22) Purdue. Notre Dame is coming off an amazing come from behind win, and Brady Quinn continued his Jekyl and Hyde act. He looked below average in the first half, and stellar in the second. It appears, as Brady goes, so goes ND. Purdue, on the other hand, is coming off of a close win over a not very good Minnesota team, and has beaten three other less than impressive teams. They're undefeated, but are they any good? We'll find out this weekend. My gut feeling is no, they not very good. The Irish win at home.
12:30pm-3:30pm CBS (40)Alabama at (4)Florida. Alabama isn't so good. Florida is.
12:30pm-3:30pm ABC Regional (6)Oregon at (34)ASU. Oregon has looked like the second best team in the Pac 10. A win in the desert will set up the game for second place in the Pac-10 (unless USC stumbles) next week when Oregon takes on Cal. ASU is a much better home team than on the road. I think the Devils pull off the upset.
3:00pm-6:00pm ESPN2 (24)Houston at (79)Miami(FL). Yes, I realize that my ranking system has Houston at #24. It's early in the year, and computer rankings will create some wacky results this early. They're not the 24th best team in the country. I'm not so sure Miami isn't the 79th though. They have been horrible. They lost to a FSU team that I don't think is very good. They got beaten soundly by a Louisville team missing their two stars, and they trounced weaker teams. They'll still beat Houston, but it won't be impressive.
4:00pm-7:00pm ABC Regional (3)USC at (32)Washington State. USC got over the "Pac-10 road opener curse" last week against Arizona. This is a dangerous Washington State team that went into the fourth quarter only down 12 to Auburn. They lost a lot of close games last year. USC will be without star receiver, Dwayne Jarrett, to a shoulder injury. Look for a close first half, and for USC to break it open in the second.
5:00pm-8:00pm ABC (2)Ohio State at (14)Iowa. Well, this appears to be the game of the day. OSU was not as impressive in the rain against JoPa's Lions. Iowa remains undefeated against mostly mediocre competition. Ohio State simply has too much speed and too many weapons for Iowa to keep up. OSU big.
5:00pm-8:00pm ESPN (1)Michigan at (53)Minnesota. Michigan has been impressive. Pre-season talk had Lloyd Carr on the hot seat. Man, how quickly we forget. Minnesota's not that good. Wolverines win.
5:00pm-8:00pm ESPN2 (28)Georgia at (83)Ol' Miss. What a scare Georgia survived against one of the worst teams of this young season. How good is Georgia? I don't think we have any idea. They shut out a Gamecock team who came within a fingertip TD grab of going into overtime against Auburn. They needed a last minute TD to beat a horrible Colorado team. Who are these people? Well, Ol' Miss won't give us any answers. They're miserable. I mean, they're really bad. They lost big to Missouri, Kentucky and Wake Forest? Ouch.
7:15pm-10:15pm Fox Sports West (109)Stanford at (50)UCLA. Did I say Colorado was bad? Or was that Ol' Miss? Sorry, I meant Stanford. UCLA had many of the same concerns on defense in last week's loss to UDub that they had last year. Most notably poor tackling. However, they don't have the gunslinging of Drew Olsen, the huge target of Marcedes Lewis or the end zone seeking missle that is Maurice Jones Drew to pull off the close wins. There should be nothing close about a game with Stanford.
You would've done the same? I feel better now...
Good luck with your picks this weekend!
