Oh yea, Big and Rich. How did they become the official soundtrack of College Football? Weird, isn't it?
I guess I should give the PFblogs round up first, and the college football schedule below the fold. There were some terrific PF posts for you to read this weekend. But as always, confine your internet time to halftimes and when Lou Holtz is speaking.
Here they are:
Amanda at Young and Broke tell us that people who drink alcohol make 10-14% higher incomes than those who abstain from imbibing! I love this story. I actually heard it on the radio yesterday morning, and wanted to post about it. I won't bother, her's is brilliant. Just for this I'm going to get trashed while I watch some glorious college football this Saturday (great games and my notes below).
Bluntmoney has some great tips on cutting down your grocery bill. The first tip is the best of all, "only buy what you need." I can't tell you how many times I got home, opened my cupboard and said, "ah man, I already have four cans of this stuff!"
Her at Make Love not Debt has simple but very good advice: save receipts, save money. My Fiancee will tell you how terrible I am about things like this. I'll plan to return something that I purchased or received as a gift (with gift receipt), and by not hanging onto the receipt or reading the return policy on the backside, miss the return period.
Financial Freedumb makes a career decision. Well, not really. But he tells us why he could never be a realtor. I don't blame him, me neither. However, what he misses is that you don't have to convince everyone that prices will continue to escalate in order to sell houses. You can also convince homeowners that prices are going to crash to get their listing before it's "too late."
Okay, so now for some football!
ESPN is billing this as "Separation Saturday." Whatever you want to call it, it is the first great weekend of college football. Here is your schedule for Saturday, September 16.
7:00am-9:00am ESPN College GameDay, Presented by Home Depot. As recommended two weeks ago, the way to do College GameDay is to Tivo it and sleep until about 8:00am. When you wake up, you can fast forward through all the fluff.
9:00am-12:00pm ESPN Iowa vs. Iowa State; ESPN2 BYU vs. Boston College. Oh man, I love me some college football, but I'm not this desperate. I think I'll get some other things done during this time so that I have the rest of the day free for my couch and my remote.
12:30pm-3:30pm CBS Auburn vs. LSU; NBC Notre Dame vs. Michigan; ABC (Regional Coverage) Oklahoma vs. Oregon. Overload! Overload! These are the times that test men's remote control thumb dexterity. These are all phenomenal games! Here's my commentary and call for each.
LSU at Auburn. Tigers vs. Tigers in the SEC opener that will likely determine the SEC West with the winner remaining the SEC favorite going forward. Both teams are loaded with a ton of future NFL talent. Both have stout defenses with enough offensive stars to provide some fireworks. Look for Kenny Irons to carry the load for the Tigers of Auburn, and the defense to carry the day in a low scoring Auburn win.
Michigan at Notre Dame. Michigan has not won a road opener in a bunch of years, and haven't won at Notre Dame in a bunch of years. Are they due? I have no idea, but I hate it when people say things like that. If being "due" was a factor then Navy should be beating Notre Dame any day now. Bueller? Bueller? No, not happening. Lloyd Carr is not a very good big game coach, and this is a big game for Michigan. Notre Dame wins, maybe big.
Oklahoma at Oregon. Oddly, these two OU schools are becoming rivals with three meetings within two calendar years. The Sooners have won the first two, and remain 4.5 point favorites for this match up. Against the spread, my money would definitely go to Oregon, but straight up? I'll still take the Ducks. In what will be the best non-conference win for the Pac-10 this year (or is it the only one?).
3:00pm-6:00pm ESPN2 Texas vs. Rice. Seriously, don't watch this. Colt McCoy may not be Vince Young, but there's nothing pretty about this game.
4:00pm-7:00pm TBS (Superstation) Arizona State at Colorado. Colorado has looked about as awful as a Division 1A college football team can look. ASU's potent offense should break the scoreboard by the time this one is done.
4:30pm-7:30pm ESPN Florida State vs. Clemson. I'm sure FSU is better than their nail biting win over Troy (what is that, USC's community college? I know, cheap shot), and Clemson may be better than their loss to Boston College (or maybe BC is good), but I have a really hard time getting interested in this one. I say Bowden Jr. wins over Papa in a snoozer.
5:00pm-8:00pm CBS Florida vs. Tennessee; ABC USC vs. Nebraska. My notes:
Florida at Tennessee. Okay, so Cal stunk it up at Tennessee. Tennessee went the following week to look rather average in a close win over an Air Force team that went 4-7 last year. Florida has convincingly beaten two lesser foes. What to think? Actually, I have no clue. I'll be watching with interest, but certainly no money riding. But I won't be watching that closely, because I'm more interested in...
Nebraska at USC. Like Florida, Nebraska is coming off of wins against two pushovers. USC is coming off of a convincing win at Arkansas. Nebraska comes in with a much improved offense and a solid defense. They're a much better team than Arkansas. USC seemed to answer the questions over how they would respond to the loss of two Heisman trophy winners (maybe one Heisman Trophy winner?) in their dismantling of Arkansas. So, what's going to happen? Despite the loss of talent and the distractions of Bush-Gate, USC has not lost at home since 2001, Pete Carroll's first year at USC. Don't expect Nebraska to end that streak tomorrow. However, the line is something like USC-21. I don't see a blow out coming. But then, USC tends to blow teams out more often than not, especially at home.
Oh man, now I'm all excited!
By the way, these teams get a big fat "BOOOOOO!"
Cal for hosting Portland State
Penn State for hosting Youngstown State
Best game not on TV: Texas Tech at TCU. I think the Red Raiders win, but actually don't know anything at all about either team. So, don't listen to me. Except when I tell you not to watch Texas vs. Rice. Seriously, not watchable.
It's so nice to have you do all of the research for us. It makes our decision making so much easier!! Thanks.
