Charles Barkley: "When I gamble I should be playing $1,000 a hand instead of $20,000 a hand"

We all have bad habits.  I bite my finger nails, I snack on unhealthy foods.  How about you, do you smoke?  Crack your knuckles?  Shop too much?  I dunno, we all have something, right?

Well, Charles Barkley does too.  He gambles.  "It's not a problem," he explains in a recent Fox Sports article, "If you're a drug addict or an alcoholic, those are problems. I gamble for too much money. As long as I can continue to do it I don't think it's a problem. Do I think it's a bad habit? Yes, I think it's a bad habit. Am I going to continue to do it? Yes, I'm going to continue to do it."

Well then.  Excuse me.

He goes on to say that he has lost about $10 million gambling.  I figure I have lost about $20,000.

But I have probably also won about $19,200.  See, an hour or so at the video poker machine, and I may lose twenty bucks net, but in that time I probably won $80 and lost $100.  I wonder if that's what he means.  He sits at the blackjack table and bets $50,000.  He hits blackjack.  He's up $75,000.  He bets another $50k, and loses.  He bets $100k and loses.  Now he's down $75k.  He bets another $75k and wins on a dealer bust.  Net, he's even.  But in the process he lost $150,000.

I'm thinking that's not what he means.

He continued to say that he's not concerned because he has enough money to cover his losses.  But added that he "hoped" to wager less money.  How does one hope to wager less?  Don't you just do so?

"When I gamble I should be playing $1,000 a hand instead of $20,000 a hand, because if I played for $1,000 a hand I probably could lose $50,000 to $100,000 a hand instead of millions of dollars," Barkley said. "And I've got to reach a happy medium because I've told all of the people in my life that first and foremost it's my money."

So, it's his money.  Glad we got that straightened out.

"I like to gamble and I'm not going to quit," he said. "I've just got to get it under control."

I know how you feel, Mr. Barkley.  I like to do heroin, and I'm not going to quit.  I've just got to get it under control.

I think one difference is that it is his money, his choice, and it hasn't, at least publicly, affected anyone else. He's very successful and what he chooses to spend his money on is his choice.

Yea, of course he's free to do what he wants with his money, but every bit of his language sounded exactly like an addict. I don't think gambling addictions are taken very seriously, but they certainly can be. It's not just about the money. I don't know if he's an addict, but I don't like the message.
