First of all, he's not the guy next door. Sure that was his image. Squeaky clean, the kind of guy who women wanted to be with and guys wanted to be. For our non-sports fans, Steve Garvey was a legendary infielder for the LA Dodgers. He was a ten time all star, and a member of the 1981 World Series Champion team. I grew up a fan of him and many others on that team. Man, what a team! Ron Cey, Davey Lopes, Bill Russell... He was true Dodger Blue, but we all know that professional sports is big business, and in 1984 the San Diego Padres offered him more money than the Dodgers could, more than $6 million over the next five years. Compared to today's professional athlete salaries, this pales, but in any era, for most people, that's big money.
So, to read this in Sunday's LA Times, was very disappointing.
The Garveys have become just another couple with greater means than most, but desperately wanting to put on a show. Like the Real Housewives of the OC. After retiring from baseball Steve Garvey went into public speaking, charging as much as $10,000 per engagement. On his website, www.stevegarvey.com, you can buy autographed bats for $125, and photos for $30. Don't you wish you could sign a picture of yourself and sell it for thirty bucks?
The Times article goes on to detail the financial difficulties that now face the Garveys.
According to the article, he not only owes greater than $300,000, but his mismanagement extends to nonpayment of child support, gardening services, items won at church charity auctions and Doctor bills! We're not talking about being late on a couple of Visa payments or forgetting to return a library book. Not paying child support isn't just a ding on your FICO. He could be looking at jail time. And now he's a motivational speaker?
His website makes a plea to any potential Hall of Fame voters as to why he should be inducted to baseball's highest honor. As a baseball player, he was one of the greats. I hope he is included in the Hall of Fame someday. And if wants to speak about the good ol' days of fielding groundballs and hitting clutch RBIs, tell me where, I'll be there. As for motivational speaking? No thanks.
My Dad never finished college, worked hard six or seven days a week (still does), and provided well for our family. If my Dad wants to give motivational speeches, I'll be there.
